Sorry this is so late in the month! This month’s condition is ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). As you can tell by the name, people with this condition have trouble paying attention and are also hyperactive, or can’t really stay still. So, let’s dive into the differences between ADHD in males and females. Males tend to have externalized symptoms, where they have more behavioral problems and impulsivity. This is why they are usually referred and diagnosed earlier than females. Females tend to internalize their symptoms, with things such as low self esteem and inattentiveness. This internalization of symptoms leads to less likelihood of diagnosis. While boys speak out their frustrations, females tend to turn their pain and anger inwards and don’t get diagnosed, leading to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Another difference is that men will act out with more physical aggression, whereas women are more verbal with their aggression. Since females don’t have the “typical” ADHD symptoms of males, our cases are often overlooked. This is how it is with a lot of conditions, and we’ve seen in our research and how you will see/have seen in these posts of the month. Thank you for reading and we’ll see you next time!
